Meaning of "Tilth"

Tilth is an Old English word used to describe the structure and quality of cultivated soil. An even older meaning describes it as the cultivation of wisdom and spirit. A soil or person in good tilth was said to be "in good heart."

The Oxford English Dictionary defines tilth as labor, work, or effort directed to useful or profitable ends, especially in regards to the soil.

"Tilth is something every farmer can recognize but no scientist can measure." -Walter

Our Mission

Our mission is to support organic and sustainable food production practices throughout the Snoqualmie and Snohomish watersheds. We strive to bring together individuals working to support and promote biologically sound and socially equitable agriculture and connect them with consumers.

Recent Article about Agriculture in Snoqualmie Valley and the Sno-Valley Tilth, "Our Valleys farming roots go deep"

Who Are We and What Do We Do?

Our members are primarily organic and sustainable farmers of the Snoqualmie and Snohomish watersheds, and community members and businesses who support local, sustainable agriculture. Our work includes providing opportunity for networking, resource sharing, and support between members through an active list-serve, membership potlucks and focus meetings; advocacy for policies at all levels that support small-scale sustainable farming; work towards strong local food systems for direct farm sales which includes the operation of the Carnation Farmers Market; education and mentoring programs to support new and transitioning farmers; collaboration with organizations with similar goals; and public awareness through education and outreach about the importance of supporting local food systems and using local foods.

We are in our 7th year as a registered 501(c)3 nonprofit.

Updates....

'Saving the Soil' by Jerry Mader, released September 16, is a work of love by local author and artist which features the farmers of our valley who are at the cutting edge with their organic and sustainable cultivation practices, with verbatim interviews and candid, honest photographs of people from our farming community. This is a work of art that offers insights into what drives those of us that have made this our life's work. This book is a documentary of our unique valley and the agricultural practices that attract people from around the world. A great keepsake book, and gift for the holidays. Carnation Farmers Market Community Shelters Project Update

We Have Broken Ground!

On October 13th 2011, after a nearly 4 year process, we have finally broken ground on the Permanent Market Shelters project now known as 'The Tolt Commons Community Shelters'. In order to make up a shortfall in funding and finally get started without further delays the SVT Board voted to contribute $18,000, made possible by the unexpected donations we received from the Snoqualmie Tribe. We are currently planning a fundraising campaign to offset this donation and to complete Phase 1B and 2.

Go to our market blog to see photos, updates and more: www.carnationfarmersmarket.wordpress.com

Phase 1A: Construct shelter with concrete slab, mortis & tenon post & beam strcture, metal roofing with skylights, framed and sheathed utility structure, onsite stormwater retention, power and water stubbed in, ADA accessible;  Fully Funded, volunteers needed! Expected Completion December 2011
Phase 1B: Hook up water and power, install lighting and outlets, outside water spigots, landscaping: Not funded, volunteers and donations needed.
Phase 2: Complete utility structure with with bathrooms, licensed kitchen for event use, storage room for farmers market. Not funded, volunteers and donations needed.

bulletA joint funding effort with USDA Rural Economic Development funds, King County funding for the support of agricultural infrastructure, and cash and in-kind contributions from the Sno-Valley Tilth and the City of Carnation
bulletTo be developed on a vacant lot owned by the city in the Tolt Commons area, a location long identified as a prime 'town center' park, at the current market site.
bulletTargeted for completion by Spring 2012
bulletA timber post & beam shed-style structure, made using traditional 'barn raising' joinery techniques, from trees donated by the city milled at Isaacson's Sawmill.
bulletVolunteer work parties will help with the preparation of the timbers, 'barn raising' events, landscaping and other site work. Contact Heidi Bohan if you would like to volunteer and or be notified of volunteer opportunities.
bulletThe entire community benefits with a completed new park with much needed facilities for picnics and other community events, increased access to local healthy foods, new jobs and new business potential and the beginning of a downtown central plaza.
bulletCity of Carnation and their citizens own the community shelters, intended for year round use as picnic shelters, and for community events, and will manage their public use.
